The Autumn Equinox, the power of intention, and why I have always believed September is the perfect time to begin again.
I have always loved September.

Long before wellness became a language we all spoke, before setting intentions became something we shared on Instagram and before I really understood the significance of the equinox, there was something about September that made me want to sharpen my pencils, buy a new notebook and start again.
I have written before on Voyages & Vanity about the power of September, and all these years later, I think I believe in it more than ever.
January has never really felt like my New Year.
September does.
Perhaps it is because so much of our lives are conditioned by the school year. September meant new shoes, new books, new teachers, new possibilities. It was a natural line in the sand between one chapter and another.
Even now, I buy a school-year diary. Mine begins in September, because in my head that is when the year really begins.
There is something about returning from summer with sun still on your skin but a slight chill beginning to appear in the morning air that feels incredibly energising. September doesn’t demand the dramatic reinvention that January seems to. It simply whispers: What next?
And I love that.

The September Reset
For me, September is a month to take stock.
Where am I? What have I achieved? What have I neglected? Who do I want to spend more time with? What do I want to create? And, perhaps most importantly, what am I ready to let go of?
It is why I think September is a month worth investing in.
Not necessarily financially. I mean investing in yourself.
Book the class. Start the project. Clear the cupboard. Make the call. Buy the diary. Reorganise your desk. Walk more. Read more. Invite people around your table. Decide what deserves your energy for the months ahead.

There is still a quarter of the year remaining. That is an enormous amount of time.
September reminds me that we don’t have to wait until January to change something.
We can begin whenever we choose.
The Power of the Equinox
This year, that feeling became even more poignant as we celebrated the Autumn Equinox at Bowland House.

Scientifically, the equinox is a beautiful moment of balance. The Sun crosses the celestial equator and neither hemisphere is tilted towards or away from it, bringing us close to an equilibrium between daylight and darkness. In 2026, the Autumn Equinox fell in the early hours of 23 September. (Royal Museums Greenwich)
But I am far more interested in what that moment represents.
Balance. Transition. Gratitude. Intention.

There is something wonderfully grounding about acknowledging the seasons rather than simply racing through them.
Nature doesn’t apologise for changing.
Trees let go.
Light changes.
The landscape rests.
And perhaps we should allow ourselves to do the same.
The equinox offers this extraordinary natural punctuation mark: a moment between the brightness of summer and the darker, quieter months ahead.
It asks us to pause.
And I think we have forgotten how important pausing can be.
An Evening at Bowland House

That was really the intention behind our Autumn Equinox evening at Bowland House.
I didn’t want to simply create another event.
I wanted to create a feeling.
As dusk fell over the Forest of Bowland, we filled the space with hundreds of candles. There were black yoga mats and white pillows, beautiful scent, movement, live music from Manchester String Quartet and a room full of people who had chosen, for a few hours, to stop.
To breathe.
To listen.
To set an intention.
It was incredibly simple, and somehow incredibly powerful.

Bowland House is still evolving. We are creating its next chapter and discovering what this beautiful place can become. Even before the doors fully reopen, evenings like this are helping us understand its purpose.
I keep returning to the idea that wellbeing isn’t necessarily about escaping your life.
Perhaps it is about creating a life you don’t constantly need to escape from.
That philosophy feels very much at the heart of what we are creating here.
The Power of Collaboration

The evening also reminded me of something else I believe passionately in: the power of collaboration.
None of these moments happen because of one person.
They happen because people believe in an idea and decide to add something to it.
We were incredibly fortunate to have Prestfield Wealth Management as our headline sponsor. Their involvement felt particularly appropriate because financial wellbeing is such an important, and often overlooked, part of our overall wellbeing.
Porsche joined us and brought another dimension to the evening. For me, great partnerships aren’t about placing a logo somewhere. They are about aligning brands with experiences and allowing people to encounter them in a way that feels natural and memorable.

Jo Malone London helped us create the sensory world of the evening, scenting the space with Pomegranate Noir and Peony & Blush Suede, with the most beautiful pillow spray adding another layer to the ritual.
Silentnight provided the pillows that transformed our yoga space and made those moments of stillness feel even more luxurious.
And then, as movement gave way to music and conversation, we raised a glass of Nyetimber.
There was something rather perfect about celebrating an English landscape with one of the pioneers of English sparkling wine.
A glass raised to the season we were leaving behind.

And another to everything still to come.
The Little Things Matter
Our guests also left carrying a little piece of the evening with them.
The goodie bags became another expression of collaboration, generously supported by brands who understood what we were trying to create.
Ancient + Brave joined us in celebrating wellbeing from within, while Penguin Books allowed us to continue the conversation beyond the evening with Liz Earle’s writing on wellbeing and longevity.
We were also incredibly grateful for the support and contributions from HIRO, alongside all of the brands, partners and people who helped us bring the evening together.

And of course, none of it would have been the same without Yoga Social Club and Chrissie Whittingham, who helped create the ritual of movement, or the Manchester String Quartet, whose live performance gave the evening its emotional heartbeat.
Every candle lit, every pillow placed, every product gifted and every glass poured contributed to the whole.
That is the magic of collaboration.
Individually, they are details.
Together, they create a memory.
So, What Is Your Intention?
Perhaps that is why this particular equinox meant so much to me.

It brought together so many things I believe in.
Beauty.
Community.
Wellbeing.
Nature.
Music.
Conversation.
And intention.
We spend so much of our lives looking forward. To the weekend. To the holiday. To Christmas. To next year.
Sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is acknowledge exactly where we are.
September gives us that opportunity.

It sits between seasons. Summer hasn’t entirely disappeared, but autumn is unmistakably arriving. The light becomes softer. The mornings become sharper. The leaves begin their extraordinary transformation.
Meteorologically, autumn begins on 1 September in the UK; astronomically, it arrives with the equinox later in the month. (Met Office)
For me, however, autumn begins with a feeling.
And every September I feel it.
That familiar sense of possibility.
So I will continue buying my school diary.
I will continue treating September as my New Year.
And I will continue believing that we don’t need to wait for January, a Monday, a birthday or some perfect moment to decide that something is going to change.
Sometimes all we need is an intention.
A quiet promise to ourselves that the next chapter can look a little different from the last.
Happy New Year.
