Why the Negroni Will Always Be a Classic

Why the Negroni Will Always Be a Classic

Three Ingredients. One unmistakable colour. More than a century of Italian style. As Negroni Week draws to a close, Voyages & Vanity raised a glass to the cocktails that somehow never goes out of fashion.

There are cocktails you drink, and then there are cocktails that seem to say something about you.

The Negroni is most definitely the latter.

That extraordinary jewel-like red. The slice of orange. The beautiful weight of a proper tumbler in your hand. Even before you take the first sip, a Negroni feels sophisticated.

It is grown-up without being stuffy, glamorous without trying too hard and, rather wonderfully, has resisted virtually every drinks trend thrown at it.

Perhaps that is why, more than 100 years after its creation, we are still ordering it.

The Beauty of Simplicity

At its heart, a classic Negroni couldn’t be simpler: gin, sweet vermouth and bitter Italian aperitivo, traditionally served in equal measures over ice and finished with orange.

That’s it.

And therein lies its brilliance.

There are no elaborate garnishes required, no long list of ingredients and certainly no need for theatrical smoke or foam. Each element has a job to do.

The gin brings its botanical character. The vermouth adds richness and sweetness. The bitter aperitivo delivers that unmistakable bittersweet edge.

Together, they create something far more interesting than the sum of their parts.

The first sip can almost take you by surprise. It is bitter, sweet, aromatic and powerful all at once. Then comes the citrus, the botanicals and that lovely lingering complexity.

It is a cocktail designed to be sipped rather than rushed.

And I rather like that.

An Italian Icon

The Negroni’s generally accepted origin story takes us to Florence around 1919, where Count Camillo Negroni is said to have asked for his usual Americano cocktail to be strengthened by replacing the soda water with gin.

The result became the Negroni.

Whether enjoyed at a beautiful hotel bar in Florence, beside the Mediterranean as the sun disappears, or mixed at home before dinner, there is still something wonderfully Italian about it.

It belongs to the world of aperitivo: that glorious European tradition of marking the transition between day and evening with a drink, conversation and something delicious to eat.

It isn’t simply about alcohol. It’s about creating a moment.

Why It Never Goes Out of Fashion

Fashion is full of pieces that become classics because their fundamental design is so good that there is very little reason to change them.

A beautifully cut black blazer. A white shirt. A great pair of jeans. A Hermès scarf.

I think the Negroni belongs in precisely the same category.

Its proportions are beautifully balanced, its colour is instantly recognisable and its simplicity gives bartenders enough room to reinterpret it without losing its identity.

Which is exactly where things become interesting.

The New Negroni

The classic will always have my heart, but one of the reasons the Negroni has remained relevant is its ability to evolve.

Swap the gin for bourbon and you enter Boulevardier territory. Play with different vermouths and the character changes again. Replace gin with mezcal and suddenly that familiar bittersweet cocktail becomes smoky, earthy and rather sexy.

And for Negroni Week, we discovered two ready-to-pour interpretations that make enjoying one at home wonderfully easy.

The Classic Negroni, made with Hayman’s London Dry Gin, stays faithful to the drink we know and love, while the Mezcal Negroni, created with The Lost Explorer Espadín Mezcal, takes it somewhere altogether smokier.

Same attitude. Two very different personalities.

And, importantly, no cocktail shaker required.

The Perfect At-Home Aperitivo

There is something rather lovely about having a beautifully made cocktail ready in the fridge.

Pour it over a large cube of ice, add a generous twist or slice of orange and serve it in your favourite glass.

Then put your phone down.

The Negroni isn’t a drink to gulp while answering emails. It deserves ten minutes, preferably with someone you like, some good music playing and a bowl of olives within reach.

Perhaps that is the real reason this cocktail has survived for more than a century.

In a world constantly asking us what is new, faster and next, the Negroni reminds us that sometimes the original was already rather fabulous.
