The idea behind Catching Butterflies centres on growth, transformation, and the courage required to embrace change. Throughout history, butterflies have been powerful symbols of renewal, representing personal evolution, hope, and the beauty that can emerge from periods of uncertainty. Their remarkable journey from caterpillar to butterfly serves as a reminder that growth often requires patience, resilience, and a willingness to transform.
Within this work, an octopus character appears – a recurring device I have developed throughout my practice to explore ideas through a degree of separation. By using a character rather than a direct self-portrait, I am able to examine universal human experiences in a way that is both playful and reflective, inviting viewers to project their own interpretations and personal stories onto the work.
In Catching Butterflies, the act of pursuing butterflies becomes a metaphor for life's opportunities, moments of joy, and personal breakthroughs. It celebrates the idea of remaining open to possibility and recognising beauty in both the expected and unexpected moments of life. The butterflies themselves represent hope, renewal, and the potential for positive change, encouraging us to let go of what no longer serves us and embrace new beginnings with curiosity and optimism.
For many, butterflies also carry a deeper emotional significance. They are often associated with cherished memories, spiritual growth, and connections to loved ones who are no longer with us. Their fleeting presence can act as a gentle reminder to remain present, to appreciate life's beauty, and to trust in the continuous process of growth and transformation.
Through a combination of symbolism and storytelling, Catching Butterflies explores the relationship between change and possibility, serving as a celebration of personal growth, resilience, and the enduring hope that accompanies every new chapter.
