The idea of Speak No Evil comes from the centuries-old proverb most commonly associated with the Three Wise Monkeys, often linked to the carvings at the Tōshō-gū Shrine in 17th-century Japan. Historically, the phrase emphasised the importance of speech as a moral act, encouraging people to avoid lies, cruelty, or words that could harm others. Rooted in the same proverb, it reinforced the idea that ethical living is reflected not only in our actions, but also in the words we choose to express. This work draws on that original meaning while offering a more contemporary interpretation.

For me, Speak No Evil is less about remaining silent and more about recognising the power of our words. It is a reflection on how language shapes relationships, influences perception, and leaves a lasting impact on both ourselves and those around us. In an age of instant communication, social media, and constant dialogue, the work serves as a reminder to speak with intention, choosing words that contribute positively rather than adding to the noise, division, or negativity that can so easily surround us.

Speak No Evil forms part of a wider series inspired by the enduring proverb of the Three Wise Monkeys. Across all three works, the message remains strikingly relevant today: what we listen to, what we look at, and how we speak all have a direct impact on who we are and what we become. Together, the series explores the relationship between our environment and our identity, encouraging a greater awareness of the influences that shape our everyday lives.
